CORONADO

Personal Solar Telescope Product Description

The PST is the latest innovation from Coronado. This 'little' telescope is another step toward our goal of making it possible for everyone to, "Experience the Sun our way."

Sub angstrom H-alpha systems have long been cost prohibitive for the amateur. Designs other than the Coronado are difficult to use because of temperature and F-Ratio requirements. Not only does the PST have a bandpass of <1.0 Angstrom but it is also thermally stable and requires no more time to operate than putting in a eyepiece and adjusting the focus...

The PST represents the same technology and quality that goes into a SolarMax series telescope but with a few unique design characteristics that allow us to offer it for less than some premium eyepieces. The PST will show you prominences, active regions, filaments, as well as other surface details.

At <1.0 Angstrom it will not reveal as much surface detail as the SolarMax series telescopes and filters but it certainly doesn't disappoint.

MaxScope 40 Product Description

The SolarMax 40 telescope has the same aperture as the P.S.T. but is distinguished by several key factors. The SolarMax 40 telescope comes standard with a < 0.7 angstrom bandpass which results in increased surface detail across the disk. A T-Max attached directly behind the etalon gives you the ability to adjust for Doppler shifted light. Bino-viewers and most imaging equipment will come to focus, sometimes with the use of a Barlow or OCS. These features plus enhanced surface detail make the SolarMax 40 telescope a more versatile instrument with remarkable solar images.

The SolarMax 40 telescope comes standard with a clamshell mounting ring and hard travel case. Optional accessories include CEMAX series eyepieces and Sol Ranger sun finder.

MaxScope 60 Product Description

For those looking for more aperture we proudly present the SolarMax 60 dedicated H-alpha telescope. Built to our exacting standards the SolarMax 60 telescope provides the user a telescope with the same lightweight portability of our SolarMax 40 telescope but the extra aperture greatly increases the resolution of detail on the surface and on the limb. With over twice the surface area of the SolarMax 40 telescope the difference is obvious.

The SolarMax 60 telescope comes standard at <0.7 Angstroms with a BF10 and is available with an internal module to lower that to <0.5 Angstroms. A T-Max attached directly behind the etalon gives you the ability to adjust for Doppler shifted light. Bino-viewers and most imaging equipment will come to focus, sometimes with the use of a Barlow or OCS. The advantage of the extra aperture becomes clear each time you view.

Coronado SolarMax™ 90

The SolarMax 90 telescope is the largest h-Alpha telescope ever to be mass-produced. It is used around the world by serious solar enthisasts and professional research facilities alike.

Noted for incredibly sharp, high-contrast h-Alpha views, this 90mm aperture solar telescope can reveal detail and structure that produce stunning visual and photographic images. Even when viewing with a single eyepiece the sun appears fully animated even revealing hints of curvature, this effect is enhanced when used with bino-viewers.

The SolarMax 90 telescope is compatible with most imaging systems and amateur astronomers have produced images that rival those gathered by multi-million dollar instruments, just see the image gallery for proof.

The SolarMax 90 comes standard with the following items: Clamshell mounting ring, Sol Ranger™ sun finder, Travel case, and full CEMAX eyepiece set.

SolarMax 60 Product Description

The SolarMax 60 can be used to adapt most telescopes under 3000mm to H-Alpha observing. Our mid-sized filter, SolarMax 60, provides greater resolution and opportunities for resolving detail at higher magnification than the SolarMax 40. By matching the SolarMax 60 with the appropriate Blocking Filter . All SolarMax series filters are sold in sets. The front mounted SolarMax and rear blocking filter. Almost all telescopes will require an adaptor plate in order to attach the SolarMax, these are available from Coronado or through your dealer. The SolarMax includes a T-Max de-tuning device. Some events on the Sun,- notably active flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are extremely fast moving. If such features occur on the disc of the Sun, their high velocity towards the observer results in their wavelength being Doppler shifted shorter than Ha. The T-Max allows the user to de-tune the SolarMax slightly to bring such phenomena into better visibility.

Coronado SolarMax 90

Like the smaller 60mm solar filter, the SolarMax 90 can be used on almost any telescope design under 3000mm focal length. However, the larger 90mm aperture increases resolution and allows for the user to view individual sections of solar activity at high magnification and when viewing at full disk the user gets the impression of curvature on the surface.

The extra resolution will provide some stunning views; you haven't seen the Sun until you have looked 'down' through a filament onto an active region. The SolarMax 90 provides consistent and breathtaking h-Alpha views.

All SolarMax series filters are sold in sets. The front mounted SolarMax and rear blocking filter. Almost all telescopes will require an adaptor plate in order to attach the SolarMax, these are available through your dealer.

Blocking Filter Product Description

The Blocking Filter is the second element in any Coronado H-Alpha system, it is just as crucial to your safety and the system's performance as the front element. Use the following guidelines for selecting which Blocking Filter you need based on the focal length of the telescope being used. If you are switching to a longer focal length telescope your SolarMax system you can purchase blocking filters separately. There is no advantage for visual use in using a larger blocking filter than required based on the focal length; however, based on customer feedback, we understand that for imaging with telescopes under 500mm fl, the BF10 is easier to use than the BF5. The Blocking Filter is not a stand alone filter. It is an integral part of the Coronado design and cannot be used without a SolarMax series filter on the front of the optical system.

How to Pick the right Blocking Filter:

F/L <500mm- Image Size: 4.6mm - BF5

F/L <1000mm- Image Size: 9.0mm - BF10

F/L <1500mm- Image Size: 13.6mm - BF15

F/L <3000mm- Image Size: 27.2mm - BF30

The BF5, 10, and 15 are all 1.25" right angle diagonals. The BF30 is a 2" straight through design and comes with a 1.25" Zero Length reducer.

CEMAX Product Description

In the construction of solar filters and associated instrumentation, Coronado takes enormous care to optimize contrast by minimizing the number of components and designing them so that they do not result in creating residual reflections and spurious light near the image. Until recently, the only component not included in this overall approach was the eyepiece. Now the new CEMAX (Contrast Enhanced) series eyepiece fills this need. Specifically designed for use at H-Alpha and multi coated on every surface (including cemented surfaces), the CEMAX eyepieces are the ultimate in contrast enhancement for the solar observer. THE CEMAX EYEPIECES ARE NOT FILTERS AND FOR SOLAR OBSERVING MUST BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A SAFE SOLAR FILTER. Many users have commented that the CEMAX also afford excellent contrast for planetary viewing.

Testimonial for CEMAX Eyepieces

"Just wanted to let you know that I've been able to use my new CEMAX eyepieces this week and compare them to other eyepieces. I was astonished at how much better - clear, crisp, contrast, detail - the CEMAX eyepieces were. I compared them against Televue Plossls, Panoptics, Radians and Naglers. Televue makes superb eyepieces - notwithstanding, the CEMAX were definitely better for solar viewing."- Mr Joseph Busch

T-Max Product Description

All SolarMax series filters from 2002 to the present day, and most SolarMax 40's, have come with a T-max as standard equipment. Contrary to a widely held perception the T-Max does not act as a tuning device but actually de-tunes the filters towards the Blue end of the H-Alpha line. It accomplishes this by changing the angle at which the light passes though the Etalon. Situated directly behind the SolarMax unit it is comprised of two black plates, set screws, and a knurled knob that, when turned, causes the two plates to separate. One remains parallel to the telescopes objective cell while the other creates an angle between the etalon and the objective cell. This angle is less than .7 degree. Any more of an angle and the filter will be removed completely off band. Within the T-Max range of movement there will be the optimal view, further tilting, in either direction, than the T-Max allows will not result in a better view.

DOUBLE FILTRATION <0.5Å SolarMax

As you can clearly see from the photos above, Double Stacking Solarmax filters dramatically increases contrast and detail of solar surface features.

Any current Coronado Solarmax filter system can be Double Stacked including the PST, 40, 60 and 90 Solarmax H-alpha telescopes.   A complete Double Stacked filter system with external Etalons (the Etalon is the heart of the Coronado H-alpha filter system) includes the following:

•2 precisely matched external Solarmax Etalon units of the same size (40mm, 60mm or 90mm).

•2 Tmax tuners

•1 adapter ring to join the two etalon units together.

•1 Blocking Filter unit.

A complete Double Stacked system with a PST or Solarmax telescope with an internal Etalon includes the following:

•1 internal Etalon and one external Solarmax Etalon unit.

•1 Tmax tuner.

•1 Blocking Filter unit either internal or external.

If you already have a Solarmax telescope with an external Etalon or Solarmax filter, you can buy a Double Stacking kit that includes one additional Etalon unit, Tmax tuner and the adapter ring.   You will need to send your existing Solarmax Etalon unit back to Meade so the additional Etalon can be matched exactly to your current Etalon for maximum performance.   If you have a PST or other Solarmax telescope with an internal Etalon, you do not need to return your telescope for matching.
